PETALING JAYA: It is important for Malaysians to come together regardless of political affiliations, especially during celebrations, says Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
The Muar MP said this when met with reporters at the Gerakan Chinese New Year open house at Menara PGRM in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (Feb 11).
When asked if his attendance at the Gerakan celebration was an indication of him being with Perikatan, Syed Saddiq denied stating that it was merely a day of celebration, not a day for politics.
He pointed out that he has been celebrating amongst all political divides.
"I have been doing this almost every year where I meet leaders of all parties, not just leaders but also their families.
"And I look forward to continuing not just since I first joined politics but until the day I end my politics," he said.
Also, present at the event were Perikatan Nasional top leadership including Perikatan Nasional (Perikatan) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau, Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, Bersatu vice-president Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin, Bersatu supreme council member Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and PAS unity bureau chairperson Dr Halimah Ali cum Kapar MP.
"I want Malaysians to realise that we can come together, and not everything is about politics. Chinese New Year is a day for unity. It is a celebration of different races and religions," said Syed Saddiq.
"When we talk about celebrating diversity it is not just about race and religion, it is also about political ideologies because while we may disagree with policies or ideas but in no way means we don’t love our country.
Meanwhile, Lau extended the Chinese New Year wishes from Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang to all Malaysians, especially the Chinese community.
He said the Marang MP apologised that he was unable to attend due to his health conditions.
Recently, the Pas leader was admitted to the National Heart Institute for treatment.
