Amicable end to ‘explosive’ lion dance

KOTA KINABALU: A shop owner has apologised for throwing firecrackers at the lion dancers she hired during their performance in Sandakan.

Sandakan OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek said the shop owner had apologised to the dancers and an amicable settlement had been reached.

“We received a report on this incident but both parties have settled the matter on their own,” he said.

No one was reported injured in this case, he added.

The incident is believed to have occurred on the third day of Chinese New Year on Monday night.

A recent viral video showed firecrackers going off with sparks flying amid a lion dance performance.

Later in the video, a woman could also be seen throwing a burning firecracker at a lion dance performer.

It is learnt that two of the dancers had ditched their friend and fled when firecrackers started to go off at their feet, leaving the man holding the lion head alone.

The last man could be seen jumping around chaotically while still trying to finish his lion dance performance.
