KUALA LUMPUR: Scammers are now posing as personnel from the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), say police.
Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said they opened 18 investigation papers on such cases between January and Feb 11 this year.

Based on investigations, he said these victims would receive calls from individuals claiming to be with the NSRC.
“These cases involved losses of RM1.49mil, with the most being lost by a 61-year-old former lecturer. The woman lodged a report in Kajang in early February over losing RM1.43mil to an individual who claimed to be an NSRC officer,” he told reporters yesterday.Comm Ramli said based on investigations, victims would receive calls from individuals claiming to be with the NSRC.

“The victims will then be told that they have been detected sending illegal weblinks and fraudulent messages.
“The victims will then be connected to another person claiming to be a police officer who instructs them to transfer their money to another account,” he said.Comm Ramli pointed out that the NSRC only receives calls and would never make calls to anyone under any circumstances.

“Anyone who calls you claiming to be with the NSRC is clearly trying to cheat you, so do not fall for it,” he said.
Comm Ramli said the public can contact the NSRC by dialling 997 to report any scam incidents.
