Taib was national political icon, says Shafie

KOTA KINABALU: Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud was a national political icon, who contributed not only to his home state but also to the country, says Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.

In expressing his condolences to the bereaved family and all in Sarawak for the passing of the former state governor, Shafie said other than serving as Sarawak chief minister, Taib had held other federal portfolios including as Information minister and Defence minister.

“He also managed to unite the diverse cultures and people of Sarawak under one governance,” he said.

“As we know, when Abdul Taib was the Sarawak chief minister, he put a lot of effort into bringing the people together as one, regardless of them being Bidayus, Ibans, Malays, Melanaus and others,” said Shafie.

He said Abdul Taib had played an important role in developing Sarawak into what it is today.

“I pray that his soul be blessed and placed among the righteous,” he added.

Abdul Taib passed away at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur around 4.40am, Wednesday (Feb 21).
