PETALING JAYA: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, conveyed his condolences to the family of former Sarawak Governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, who passed away yesterday.
Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, also conveyed her condolences.
“The late Abdul Taib made a significant impact and will always be remembered, especially by the people of the Land of the Hornbills. Al-Fatihah,” according to the post on Sultan Ibrahim’s official Facebook page.
Taib, 87, died in a private hospital here at 4.40am yesterday and funeral rites were performed at Masjid Negara here before his remains were flown to Kuching in a military aircraft.
A state funeral will be held at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly complex in Kuching today. His remains will then be brought to Masjid Demak for prayers before being laid to rest at the family cemetery at Demak Jaya.
In a separate post, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin conveyed their condolences through the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page.
His Royal Highness said that Taib was a prominent figure who contributed a lot to the state of Sarawak and the country.
“The late Abdul Taib has also shown commitment and full cooperation during the meetings of the Conference of Rulers throughout his service as the Governor of Sarawak,” the post read.
Their Royal Highnesses also expressed their condolences to Taib’s family members and prayed that he would continue to be blessed by Allah, as well as placed among the righteous.
Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah also expressed their condolences, describing the passing of Taib as a huge loss to Sarawak and the country.
“May Allah accept all his good deeds, forgive all his sins, place him among the righteous and grant him paradise,” said the statement uploaded on the Kesultanan Pahang official Instagram account.
