KUALA SELANGOR: From RM10 food baskets to free helmets, visitors thronged the Central Zone Madani Rakyat programme here to get their hands on essential items being sold at hefty discounts.

A total of 3,000 Madani combo baskets will be available during the three-day programme, which started yesterday at the Kuala Selangor Sports Complex.

Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority contract marketing division senior assistant director Muhammad Azreen Abdul Jalil said there are two Madani combo varieties, namely essential goods and Agromas products.

“As of noon, around 300 Madani combo baskets had been sold and we also offer 5,000 local rice packs at RM26 each throughout the programme,” he told Bernama.

He said the Madani combo baskets are available at the Agro Madani sales booth, which opens from 9am to 10pm today, and from 9am to 6pm tomorrow.

At the Rahmah sales booth, visitors can purchase 34 food items, including chicken, fish, cooking oil and rice, with up to 30% discounts.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) stall is also providing a total of 1,000 helmets daily for early birds. Those who want to get free helmets need to bring their existing helmets and driver’s licence.E. Subrayan, 80, who lives in Tanjung Karang, Selangor, said he came to get a free helmet and to buy essential items.

“I was really waiting for this programme to reach our area to get a free helmet,” he said.

Mohd Nadzahar Cendana, 45, suggested that the government distribute helmets to children in such programmes in the future.

He said the process of exchanging and claiming the free helmet was easy and quick with more than five counters provided by JPJ.

The Madani Rakyat programme in Selangor will be extended to Perak, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. It is organised by the Prime Minister’s Office through the Performance Acceleration Coordination Unit, Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, and Selangor government.

It is a continuation of the Madani Government One Year Anniversary programme held at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium last December.
