Police investigate dog abuse video after viral outrage on social media

PASIR GUDANG: Police have launched an investigation following a viral video showing a dog being abused by its owner in a housing area in Taman Johor Jaya.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the investigation was based on a police report lodged by a 49-year-old woman.

“Initial investigation revealed that the incident occurred at 9.30pm last Thursday (Feb 22) in front of a house in Johor Jaya.

“This is based on a video of the incident uploaded on Facebook showing a dog owner caning his dog,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Feb 25).

Supt Sohaimi added that the case is being investigated under Section 428 of the Penal Code for mischief by killing or maiming animals.

“It is also investigated under Section 29 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for causing or allowing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for the improper use of network facilities,” he said.

Earlier, a 29-second video was uploaded on the Facebook page Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better, showing a man assaulting a dog using a cane.
