Dry season sparks water worries in Sabah villagers

KOTA KINABALU: With the dry season starting, many villagers, especially those depending on the river or gravity pipes for water supply, are getting worried each day.

In Kiulu, over 200 households in seven villages are already experiencing water supply issues.

The villages affected by water supply disruptions are Bungoliu, Tomis Baru, Kelawat, Simpangan Lama, Balabakan, Tomis Mangi Pangi and Bongol.

Kiulu assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who visited these villages to assess the current situation yesterday, suggested that short-term immediate action be taken.

He also met with Village Development and Security Committee leaders and village chiefs as well as affected villagers to hear their plight and discuss short- and long-term solutions.

“Among the temporary solutions proposed is to provide water tanks to store water in each affected village while the use of water pumps from more effective water sources can be the long-term solution,” he said.

Bangkuai said the Community Development Leader Unit Office had submitted a report on the situation to the Tuaran district disaster committee through the Kiulu district office.

“Immediate action is needed to address this increasingly pressing water issue,” he added.

He also urged all village committees to propose temporary solutions via a report.

“We will continue to monitor developments and provide updated information to villagers as soon as possible,” said Bangkuai.
