Use technology to end "Ali Baba practices", proposes Johari

PUTRAJAYA: A new database should be set up to allow any ministries to identify genuine business interactions between bumiputra and non-bumiputra business entities to put an end to Ali Baba practices," says Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

The Plantation and Commodities Minister said if banks have the Credit Reference Information System (CCRIS) and CTOS credit database system as their reference for their customers, the government should have a similar database for their reference.

He said that he would like to have a specific database that any ministry can use to see whether bumiputra or non-bumiputra companies are genuine when they interact with each other.

"This database can verify and certify whether the entities are genuine. We want to eliminate any form of 'Ali Baba' practices," he said during the Madani 1 discussion sessions on the first day of the 2024 Bumiputera Economic Congress on Thursday (Feb 29).

Other speakers at the discussion session were Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong and Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk R. Ramanan.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also made a short appearance to listen to the speakers during the session.
