Don't fall for scams using AI-edited videos of leaders, public told

KUALA LUMPUR: Social media users have been reminded to be wary of scam syndicates using videos of leaders edited using artificial intelligence (AI) to deceive the public.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching issued the reminder after the spread of an edited clip purporting to show Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim discussing an investment scheme with lucrative returns.

Teo said she had sent the video link to Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp among others, asking for the clip to be removed from all its platforms.

"This is not the first time I have received complaints about videos of the Prime Minister being produced with AI for the purpose of investment fraud. We should all be cautious," she said, adding that it is unreasonable for a prime minister to discuss such schemes.

Speaking to reporters after opening the ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium 2024 here on Tuesday (March 5), Teo said technology giants or social media platform providers should consider methods of alerting users to AI-generated content.

"The government is also exploring ways to enhance cooperation with these companies on this matter," she added.

She said the adoption of new technologies should be encouraged, but urged the people to remain aware of the risks and challenges they pose. – Bernama
