PETALING JAYA: Claims of human rights violations and abuse in Malaysian Immigration detention centres housing refugees have been detailed in a Human Rights Watch (HRW) report.
The global watchdog group said its interviews with 43 individuals described deplorable living conditions devoid of medical care with detainees subject to torture and prolonged physical abuse, allegedly leading to several deaths.
According to the report, titled "We Can’t See the Sun: Malaysia’s Arbitrary Detention of Migrants and Refugees", the abuse also included forced squats and push-ups, beatings and detainees being forced to hold stress or submission positions.
According to the interviewees, strict and arbitrary rules were enforced and punishment meted out for requesting basic necessities.
A former detainee also told of instances where people would be beaten up for requesting more food, a blanket or extra water.
