IPOH: The police are on the lookout for those responsible for scattering threatening notes in front of the house of Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming’s mother.
Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Mohamed Nordin Abdullah said Nga’s 76-year-old mother had found numerous bits of paper in front of her house in Ayer Tawar, Manjung, while she was leaving the residence at about 10.15am yesterday.
The notes contained writing that said “Nga Kor Ming Jangan Cabar Islam” (Don’t Challenge Islam), he said.
“The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation by anonymous communication and we are still trying to determine the cause.
“The police would like to advise the people not to speculate as it could jeopardise the investigation,” he said in a statement yesterday.
ACP Mohamed Nordin urged those with information to come forward or contact investigating officer Insp Fariq Nazmi Mustafa at 013-331 7099.
Last month, Nga had announced that plans were underway to nominate Chinese new villages in Selangor as a Unesco World Heritage Site to recognise their cultural and historical significance.
The proposal was questioned by Bersatu MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.
However, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari remarked that the matter should not be turned into a racial issue.
On Wednesday, a shouting match erupted in the Dewan Rakyat after Bersatu MP Datuk Seri Ismail Abd Muttalib of Maran claimed that the Selangor government was recognising the struggles of the communists through the proposal.
Meanwhile, on the threatening notes against Nga, Perak DAP said: “It violates the law, besides contradicting the values of a civilised society.
“We leave it to the discretion of the police to investigate and deal with the case.
“We uphold the rule of law and believe that every individual has the right to voice their opinions without having to worry about being threatened or physically attacked,” it said in a Facebook post.
It added that it was important for the people to respect diversity and different voices should be accepted with full openness in a democratic and multiracial society.
“We also request all parties to maintain calm and be rational in facing this situation,” it said.
Attempts to get Nga for comments were unsuccessful as at press time.
