Penang CM hands out flowers for International Women's Day at Chowrasta Market

GEORGE TOWN: Flowers have a way of making anyone feel special and septuagenarian Susan Tan thinks its the right way to start International Women's Day.

"It is always nice beginning the day with flowers, especially on such a special occasion.

"I believe Women's Day must be celebrated and I do so every year.

"I came over to the Chowrasta Market as I knew the Chief Minister (Chow Kon Yeow) was giving out flowers.

"I missed it last year so thought I should head over this time," said the 72-year-old when met at the market in George Town, Penang.

Tan, who works as an executive secretary at a local association, said her children shower her with flowers on the occasion as well.

"My kids get me flowers and I have friends who celebrate together as well.

"Every year we go to an orphanage to celebrate with the children and then do something together.

"This year we had to celebrate earlier as the actual date falls on Friday and everyone is working," she said.

Housewife Sheley Wang, 36, who is on holiday from Johor was pleasantly surprised to receive a flower from Chow.

"We do not have this back home and I have never received a flower like this.

"It is a nice way to start my day," she said.

Wang said while she does not celebrate the day, it is important to appreciate women.

"I will probably spend the day enjoying Penang food and exploring the place with my friend," she said.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow gave out 500 carnations to women at the market, spreading cheer and the importance of women.

He wished all women a Happy Women's Day on behalf of the state government.

"We are here to give out flowers to women as a symbol of appreciation to them for their sacrifices and contribution.

"We have been doing this for decades.

"It is nice to see changes over the years including the formation of the Penang Women's Development Corporation and other groups that have given the opportunity to women to involve themselves in the growth of the state.

"While there have been many achievements in championing women's rights there is still much to do to ensure they have equal rights, space and opportunities as men especially in politics," he said.
