GEORGE TOWN: The long-awaited restoration of the Penang High Court to its former glory will finally conclude in July.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the project, which commenced on Dec 1, 2021, has so far achieved a physical progress of 82%, compared to the scheduled progress of 71%.“The project was granted two extensions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This project was implemented through conventional negotiations with the original contract costing RM17.9mil.
“It is expected to be fully completed by July 13 this year,” he said after inspecting the upgrading and conservation project at the 119-year-old Penang High Court yesterday.
Ahmad Maslan said the restoration works on the building complied with the National Heritage Act 2005, with approval from the National Heritage Department.
“Upon completion, the Penang High Court building will fulfil the government’s commitment to provide comfort and well-being to users while preserving its architectural elegance,” he said.
Ahmad Maslan said the Penang High Court building played a crucial role in George Town’s recognition as a Unesco World Heritage Site in July 2008.
“This heritage building faced several issues, including roof leaks, termite damage, humidity, fungal growth and water stains.
“Much effort has been taken to fix these issues and conserve the buildings’ original structure while adding the necessary facilities to meet future needs,” he said.
