MELAKA: The Melaka Zoo, the oldest tourist attraction in the state, will soon embark on an expansion and development plan.
Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ) president Datin Sapiah Haron said an allocation of RM4mil has been set aside for the purpose of upgrading the menagerie and also to bring in three more exotic species as the newest exhibit.
"Our zoo needs upgrading work, especially with the ongoing Visit Melaka Year 2024, to remain relevant to tourists," she said in an interview on Friday (March 8).
Sapiah said the allocation will mainly be used to upgrade the animal enclosures and other urgent works.
She said MPHTJ, as the agency managing the zoo, will ensure that the welfare of the 656 animals from 320 species there are given priority.
She said the three new species will be brought in through exchange programmes with other local zoos and those from Indonesia.
"These three new arrivals are expected to be exhibited soon," she added.
