Perak ready to talk to Putrajaya about adopting waste management Act

IPOH: Perak is ready to hold discussions with the Federal Government on adopting the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672), says exco member Sandrea Ng Shy Ching.

The state housing and local government committee chairman said prior to this, the Perak government had held initial talks on the matter.

“The state government has an open stance. We are ready to listen and talk, as we want to ensure whatever decision is made will guarantee the interests of the state, as well as to make sure the best services are provided.

“So we are ready to listen, as we know that there are efforts by the Housing and Local Government Ministry to encourage more state governments to adopt the Act,” she told reporters after launching the Ipoh Landscape Master Plan and Infrastructure and Traffic Management Planning Master Plan here on Monday (March 11).

On Sunday, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said Selangor had agreed in principle to adopt the Act, and the ministry would also welcome negotiations with Perak to do the same.

Act 672, which was enacted to regulate the management of controlled solid waste and public cleansing, would see the separation of solid waste at the source into recyclables and non-recyclables.

It is currently used in Pahang, Johor, Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Perlis, Kedah, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

Ng said Perak welcomed such engagements, but at the same time, the state would also take into account the experiences of other states that have adopted the Act.

“In any case, if the state decides to adopt the Act, we will also ensure that certain terms will be taken into account, suitable according to the state (of Perak), and we will make the necessary (adjustments) accordingly,” she added.
