Two fishermen feared missing

KUANTAN: Two fishermen were reported missing when they did not return to the jetty in Kampung Baru Beserah after a fishing trip on Saturday.

Kuantan district police chief Asst Comm Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said police were informed at 11.52am yesterday about the incident involving Zahari Sidek, 57, and Zakaria Ramli, 57, both from Beserah.

The two men went out to sea at 7am on Saturday and were supposed to return to the jetty at 6pm the same day.

It is believed that they were last sighted fishing about 47km from the coastline by their friends who were on their way back to the jetty around 3pm, Bernama reported.

“Based on information received, there were eight boats that went out fishing and all except the victims’ boat returned to the jetty,” ACP Wan Mohd Zahari said.

According to reports, the fishermen had brought GPS equipment and life jackets but did not have their mobile phones.

A search and rescue operation is currently underway.
