Over 2,500 schools in Malaysia involved in Dual Language Programme

KUALA LUMPUR: Over 2,500 schools nationwide are involved in the Dual Language Programme (DLP) in 2024 compared to only 377 in 2016, says Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

She said a total of 2,501 schools are participating in the DLP, which includes boarding schools, national schools, vernacular schools and religious schools.

"There has been a significant increase in the number of DLP schools since 2016.

"The number of schools have increased in 2017 (to 1,190), 2018 (1,342), 2019 (1,357), 2020 (2,259), 2021 (2,298), 2022 (2,366) and 2024 (2,501)," she said.

Fadhlina said this in a written reply to a question raised by Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) in Parliament on Wednesday (March 13).

Dr Wee had asked Fadhlina on the number of schools participating in DLP between 2016 and 2023.

The MCA president also asked if the guidelines for the DLP programme would be maintained.

Fadhlina said that the guidelines would be maintained and improved further.

She added that the new guidelines were scheduled to be issued before the 2024/2025 school session which began on March 10 for Group A states and March 11 for Group B states.
