Man arrested, another still on the hunt for cable theft, says Ipoh Police

IPOH: A man was arrested while another managed to escape following a car chase after a telecommunications cable theft incident here.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Yahaya Hassan said a 58-year-old man was arrested after the car he was in crashed and overturned during the chase on Thursday (March 14) before dawn.

ACP Yahaya said the police had acted on a tip-off about the cable theft incident at Jalan Pasir Mas in Taman Mayfair at about 5am.

"A mobile patrol vehicle was sent to the location to check and found two men behaving suspiciously, believed to be stealing the cables.

"The two men got into a car and fled, sparking the car chase," he said in a statement.

"Two more police patrol vehicles were requested to join the chase before the suspects' car crashed," he said.

ACP Yahaya said the man who was arrested was found trapped in the car after the crash.

"Checks conducted in the car found some cables, believed to be stolen.

"The suspect was then sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for treatment, where he was found to have broken his right collarbone," he said.

ACP Yahaya said the case would be investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for cable theft.

"If found guilty, he can be jailed up to seven years or fined or both.

"The case will also be investigated under Section 186 of the same Code for obstructing civil servants from performing their duties," he said.

Those convicted can face a jail term for up to two years or fined up to RM10,000 or both," he added.

ACP Yahaya said the police are not hunting for the second suspect who managed to escape.

"Those with information of the incident are to contact investigating officer Insp Mohamad Hakim Al Balkis at 011-1125 6246 to help with the investigation," he said.

"Any information on crime activities can be forwarded to the district police control centre at 05-254 2222," he added.
