KUALA KANGSAR: Two friends have been arrested for trafficking methamphetamine worth RM2.57mil from out of a car.
Federal Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said 51.5kg of the drug was found under the bonnet of the car parked in front of a building here.
A 31-year-old wireman and a 33-year-old factory operator were arrested during the operation carried out by the Perak NCID on Saturday afternoon.
“When the 31-year-old passenger got out of the car, police ambushed him,” he told a press conference at the Kuala Kangsar police district headquarters here yesterday.
Comm Khaw said the 33-year-old man had pocketed RM50,000 for the job while his friend was paid RM500 to transport the drugs.
The total amount of drugs seized could be used by 500,000 addicts, he added.
He said police had checked the car boot and found three black bags, with the first two bags containing 17 packets of the drug believed to be methamphetamine, while the third bag had 16 packets of the same drug.
“In total, 51.5kg of the drugs brought in from a neighbouring state were seized.
“This is the largest drug haul in the state so far this year,” he said, adding that the drugs were meant to be distributed in Kuala Kangsar and other parts of Perak.
Comm Khaw said a car worth RM53,000 belonging to the 31-year-old suspect’s father was seized as well.
Both suspects, he said, tested positive for methamphetamine. They have been remanded until March 23.
“The 33-year-old man has previous drug-related offences,” he added.
Comm Khaw said the syndicate had been active since December last year.
