KUCHING: Sarawak-based companies are poised to take up investment opportunities in Kalimantan in tandem with the development of the new Indonesian capital Nusantara, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The Premier said the state has established cooperation to provide assistance in the development of Nusantara.
For instance, he said Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) had invested in a hydropower project in Malinau, North Kalimantan, with a 25% stake in its holding company.
"This project will supply energy to Kalimantan, and Indonesia plans to expand its hydropower development.
"We are already there, so we will continue to be part of the development in Nusantara," he told reporters after handing over Raya goodies to security and enforcement agencies here on Wednesday (March 20).
Abang Johari was responding to the call by Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Syed Md Hasrin Tengku Hussin for Malaysian companies to take advantage of investment prospects in east Kalimantan close to Nusantara.
The ambassador said there were numerous opportunities for Malaysian companies to contribute to the development of Nusantara.
He said this during a visit to Balikpapan, east Kalimantan, on Tuesday (March 19).
Abang Johari also said the Sarawak Chamber of Bumiputera Entrepreneurs and Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak had held meetings with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry to explore areas of cooperation such as import and export of goods.
"Many Sarawak companies have business in Kalimantan, mostly in west Kalimantan which is closer to us.
"Once flights resume between Pontianak and Sarawak, this will open more opportunities for closer ties between Indonesia and Sarawak," he added.
