Heatwave alert issued for Batu Pahat district after three days of high temperatures


JOHOR BARU: The Batu Pahat district has been issued a Level 1 heatwave alert after seeing three consecutive days of temperatures ranging between 35°C and 37°C.

Johor health and environmental committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the alert was issued based on updates as of 4.30pm on Wednesday (March 20).

“Based on weather model analysis, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) expects to continue seeing dry and hot weather with temperatures above 35°C in most places in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah for the next seven days.

“However, there are still chances for thunderstorms with heavy rain and strong wind in late afternoons and nights, especially in the west of the peninsula and Sarawak,” he said in a statement here.

He added that Johor is expected to receive an average amount of rain between April and June. and said that the public should take some precautionary steps to protect themselves against the impact of the heatwave.

“Among measures that can be taken include reducing outdoor activities involving sun exposure, keeping hydrated and drinking enough water after breaking fast until sahur time, drinking more cold water, and keeping homes cold with fans and air conditioners.

“The public is also advised to avoid spicy food, avoid wearing dark and thigh clothes, and avoid drinking caffeinated, sweet and carbonated drinks," said Ling.

“They are encouraged to wear a cap or use an umbrella, in addition to using sunscreen, to protect their skin from the sun,” he added
