MELAKA: The Melaka government has assured the people that there is sufficient water supply for the Hari Raya festive season in the wake of the El Nino phenomenon.
Melaka works, infrastructure, public amenities and transport committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer said the total storage of water in all three Dams in the state stood at comfortable levels.
"The levels have not reached a critical stage and we have enough water in storage up to June," he said after visiting a pump house at Ayer Keroh Lake here on Thursday (March 21).
Hameed Mytheen said that the storage capacity of the Durian Tunggal Dam was at 80%, the Just Dam (95.7%) and the Asahan Dam at 95.5%.
"Our storage capacity can last for the next two months if there is not a single drop of rain recorded," he said.
Hameed Mytheen said the state would make necessary preparations to brace for a prolonged dry spell.
He also advised people to be prudent in utilising the water during this period.
"We hope the public can alert us if they come across any form of water leakages," he said.
Hameed Mytheen also clarified that hot weather had not drastically reduced the supply at Ayer Keroh Lake as claimed by certain quarters.
"The water at the lake is being pumped out to be channelled into Sungai Melaka in a bid to increase supply to 15mil litre per day," he said adding that the pumping work that started on Feb 4 to March 8 had been halted after the water level at the lake dropped, drastically.
The Ayer Keroh Lake had been gazetted under Section 62(1) of the National Land Code 1965 for the purpose of supplying raw water during hot spells.
