KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian vehicles made 1.91 billion trips on highways through 2023, says Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He said that this is a 10.4% increase from 2022, as 1.73 billion trips were recorded that year and added that there was a 13.6% increase in the number of accidents in 2023 compared to the previous year.
" (There were) 23,216 cases of which 1203 (5.18%) involved heavy vehicles,” added Nanta, who also said that out of the 281,470 cases of vehicle breakdowns in 2023, 57,457 of them involved heavy vehicles.
He said this in a written reply to Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (PH-Ledang) on Thursday (March 20) who had asked to state the numbers of road accidents and vehicle breakdowns on highways, especially those involving heavy vehicles.
The minister added that among the problems experienced by heavy vehicles were issues with tyres, brakes, broken steering wheels, broken axles, overloading, broken hooks and electrical/mechanical problems such as malfunctioning lights
“Based on statistics from the Malaysian Highway Road Accident Analysis Database System (MHROADS) monitored by the Malaysian Highways Authority (LLM), it was found that the total number of accidents on all tolled highways in 2022 was 20,444 cases of which 1171 (5.73%) involved heavy vehicles,” he said.
