TASEK Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan (pic) wants Parliament to form a committee to investigate his claim that two of his fellow Perikatan Nasional MPs had attempted to influence his conduct as a lawmaker and for him to express support for the government.
Citing Standing Order 80A, Wan Saiful said he wanted an investigation to be carried out and for the two MPs to be punished.
He also said there was a precedent for such a committee to be set up, pointing to one that had been set up related to claims by the former Bukit Gelugor MP, the late Karpal Singh, in 2009.
In February 2009, Parliament appointed a committee to investigate a scuffle that involved Karpal and a group of Selangor Umno Youth members.
“I propose that the Dewan Rakyat form a committee to identify and punish the MPs for trying to influence my conduct as a lawmaker,” said Wan Saiful.
He claimed that among the offers, which also involved Parliamentary allocations, was a project worth RM2mil, payment for his wife’s medical expenses, his legal costs and other unspecified token amounts.
He alleged there was also an offer for his court cases to be dropped.
He also claimed that Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi Abu Naim had first approached him with two other individuals, with one identifying himself as “Hasnan.”
On Feb 26, Hasnan came to see him with another individual and with an MP from Selangor, he further alleged.
“The MP had proposed what I should say in Parliament on Feb 28 when I was scheduled to debate the royal address. This was an attempt to influence my behaviour and actions.
“This is an attempt to disrupt, offer inducement, and engage in threatening actions to influence my behaviour as an MP,” added Wan Saiful.
Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor advised him to write to the Speaker for further deliberation.
“From my observation, it is rare for MPs to use Standing Order 80A. The allegations disclosed by Tasek Gelugor not only draw attention to the quorum in Parliament itself but also Malaysians as it is broadcast live.
“The allegations also involve other MPs. Let the Speaker deliberate and consider it,” said Ramli.
To this, Wan Saiful said he would submit the proposal.
“I hope we can all uphold the dignity and honour of this House without interference from external parties,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mohd Azizi strongly denied that he had tried to influence Wan Saiful to support the government.
“That is actually serious libel. On the contrary, we only bumped into one another while I was having coffee at an Arabic cafe in a hotel in the city,” he said when contacted.
Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hapani (PN-Batu Karang) also denied the allegations, saying that such remarks were aimed at tarnishing his name.
He claimed this was Wan Saiful’s attempt to boost his personal agenda.
