JELUTONG MP RSN Rayer surprised many with his call to the government to consider a special fund or allocation to help Malaysian Indians buy gold, Makkal Osai reported.

He told the Dewan Rakyat recently that this was because buying, using and gifting gold is a prominent part of Indian culture.

“This begins not long after birth when babies are gifted gold, which continues throughout their life when they reach puberty, get married, and hit other milestones.

“Higher-income households can afford gold. But it remains out of reach for those in the middle and lower-income groups,” he added. Some MPs were surprised by the request and said such a proposal had never been made.

> A total of 32 people in Selangor have finally received their identification documents in the last three months, thanks to MySEL’s efforts, Makkal Osai also reported.

MySEL is a Selangor government body set up to help resolve birth certificate and MyKad problems in the state.

State executive councillor V. Papparaidu, who handed over identification documents to 10 people at his office, said 83 cases were submitted to MySEL but the remaining cases needed additional supporting documents.
