CHINA has become one of the top destinations for graduates from independent Chinese schools seeking tertiary education, says educationist group Dong Zong.
According to Sin Chew Daily, Dong Zong chairman Tan Tai Kim said that over 1,000 graduates annually utilise their Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) qualifications to gain admission to Chinese universities.
Speaking during the China Higher Education Fair recently, Tan said this was a great milestone in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China.
“One of the most notable things is that Malaysian students brought our culture of performing the 24 Festive Drum to China 27 years ago. The Huaqiao University set up the first troupe in 1997 with many other universities following suit.”
Beyond cultural enrichment, Tan sees this as a testament to the success of the independent Chinese school education system.
The UEC qualification is taken by sixth-form students and is considered equivalent to Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) in some foreign universities.
> Malaysian singer Geraldine Gan is set to tie the knot with longtime boyfriend Samuel Ting, reported China Press.
The former Astro Star Quest reality show winner shared photos of herself adorned with the diamond ring while trekking in the Swiss Alps. Both Gan, 32, and Ting, a hairstylist, donned matching outfits in the snapshots.
“Even though you are not usually romantic, and you like to tease me, but you have always been a pillar of support. We have spent 14 years together.
“Thank you for enabling me to realise my dream of experiencing a (proposal) ceremony in my dream country and setting,” she said.
Many local artistes and musicians took to social media to congratulate the couple.
