MACC chief to look into claims made by Mahathir’s sons

CYBERJAYA: Tan Sri Azam Baki said he will look into claims by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s two eldest sons that they are not the target of investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

“Let me get a clearer picture first before I make any comments,” the MACC chief commissioner said when met by reporters after the launch of the Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence (CCoE) here yesterday.

When pressed further, Azam said he did not want to comment on the claims made by Mokhzani, 63, and his elder brother, Mirzan, 65, during a recent interview.

Both claimed they were merely witnesses in the investigations, with their father Dr Mahathir being the “primary suspect”.

They also claimed that the MACC had not provided them with the details of the investigation against their father.

In January, Mokhzani and Mirzan were ordered by the MACC to declare their assets dating back to 1981, the year Dr Mahathir became prime minister.

They were given 30 days to do so and later given a 30-day extension by the MACC owing to the extensive nature of their assets.

The investigations are said to be linked to entities named in the Pandora Papers as well as the Panama Papers, which the MACC had been probing since August 2022.
