MELAKA: Cleanliness campaigns helped reduce illegal dumping sites in Melaka, says SWM Environment Sdn Bhd.
SWM corporate general manager Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin said the state registered a decline in the number of hotspots identified by his team for this year.
He said the number reduced from 89 in 2023 to 78 hotspots for this year that were pinpointed by his team during pre-emptive surveillance.
"The decline figure (on hotspots) identified for this year shows that the cleanliness campaigns and awareness embarked on by stakeholders have been effective.
"It's good to hear the number of hotspots in the state has declined," he said during a Buka Puasa event organised by SWM Environment at a leading hotel here on Friday (March 29).
Mohd Norlisam said despite the drop in hotspots, special attention to garbage collection at the hotspots in the state would be given to prevent uncontrolled piles of rubbish during the festive season.
He said the focus would be on high-density areas celebrating Hari Raya as well as tourist spots, with 37 of the locations in Melaka Tengah, 15 in Alor Gajah, and 20 in Jasin.
Mohd Norlisam said a special operation will be launched from April 7 to April 13 involving 772 workers and 132 machines.
"Apart from centralised garbage bin collection, SWM Environment will also focus operations on scheduled collection of domestic waste and at public as well as public places and recreational beaches," he said.
Mohd Norlisam added that his team expects solid waste generation to increase during this year's Hari Raya festive season, hence, monitoring will focus on each centralised bin identified according to the operational branch.
