SEREMBAN: A woman and her boyfriend pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here to a charge of neglecting her three-year-old daughter which eventually led to her death.
Noraini Haron, 42, and Mohd Khairul Shamsua Israk, 38, did not contest the charge after it was read to them before Judge Datin Surita Budin.
The duo were charged with committing the offence from March 18 to 24 between noon and 6.45pm at a house in Port Dickson.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Syafina Mohd Radzuan then asked the court for another date for sentencing as her team had yet to get a copy of the forensic report.
She also told the court that the prosecution was not offering bail as it was a serious offence.
"We are however leaving it to the court's discretion to offer bail to the accused.
"If bail is offered, the prosecution is asking for a high amount," she said.
Mohd Khairul who was unrepresented asked for a low bail as he had to provide for his parents and six children.
He also told the court that he did not earn much working as a workshop assistant.
Noraini also pleaded for a low amount as she was not working and had to provide for her two other children.
Both were unrepresented.
Judge Suriati then fixed bail at RM20,000 with one surety for each of the accused.
They were also told to report at the nearest police station once a month till the case is disposed of.
She then fixed May 2 for the outcome of the forensic report and sentencing.
On March 28, Port Dickson OCPD Supt Aidi Sham Mohamed said police had received a report from the district hospital four days earlier on the incident.
According to the report, the victim was in critical condition after falling out of a van.
Mohd Khairul was subsequently arrested.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the incident took place at 8.30pm on March 15, when Mohd Khairul opened the van door after he stopped outside a shop.
The child sustained bruises on several parts of her body and was pronounced dead at the Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital here on March 26.
Aidi Sham said Mohd Khairul had tested negative for drugs and had three previous cases on his criminal record.
