PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has condemned the attack at Iranian consulate building in Syria which led to several deaths and injuries.
The Foreign Ministry said the deliberate targeting of diplomatic premises was a “flagrant violation of international norms and diplomatic protocols.”
“Malaysia calls upon all parties involved to adhere to international law and recognise diplomatic premises as inviolable spaces.
“This incident underscores the pressing need for dialogue and de-escalation in the region,” it said in a statement on Tuesday (April 2).
In extending condolences and sympathies to the victims and their families, the ministry said Malaysia urged for a thorough investigation of the attack.
It was reported that suspected Israeli warplanes bombed Iran’s embassy in Damascus on Monday (April 1) in a strike that Iran said killed seven of its military advisors including three senior commanders, marking a major escalation in Israel’s war with its regional adversaries.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said that among the dead was Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the Quds Force, an elite foreign espionage and paramilitary arm.
Iran’s ambassador to Syria said the strike hit a consular building in the embassy compound and that his residence was on the top two floors.
According to reports, Israel has long targeted Iran’s military installations in Syria and those of its proxies, but the attack was the first time Israel hit the embassy compound itself.
