Umno to provide legal assistance to Dr Akmal over police probe

PETALING JAYA: Umno will be offering legal assistance to its Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh who is currently being probed by the police, says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

According to the Umno secretary-general, he had also spoken to Dr Akmal on the phone regarding his arrest on Friday (April 5).

“Umno have asked lawyers and Umno’s legal adviser Datuk Mohd Hafarizam Harun to assist Dr Akmal,” Asyraf said in a Facebook post Friday (April 5).

Asyraf said that Dr Akmal is doing fine and he had given full cooperation to the police for the investigation.

“According to Dr Akmal, he was scheduled to give his statement in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (April 6), but he was arrested the moment he arrived in the Kota Kinabalu International Airport,” said Asyraf.

Dr Akmal was in Sabah to attend Umno’s Kembara Ramadan programme in Beaufort.

The Umno Youth chief was arrested at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport at 10.30am on Friday (April 5) and he was released at around 12.15pm after giving his statement at the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters.

On Friday (April 5), Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husian said the police had received two police reports against Akmal and the case is now being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

“Investigation papers will be referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers after the probe is completed,” added Razarudin.

Dr Akmal’s arrest came following criticisms over a picture uploaded on social media showing him wielding a sword.

Dr Akmal has been calling for action and a boycott against KK Super Mart over the controversial socks issue.
