Anwar: No one is above the law

GEORGE TOWN: No one is above the law when it comes to 3R (religion, race and royalty) issues and the Constitution, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said there would be no compromise, especially when the country’s institutions and the Constitution are challenged.

“It does not matter who the person is, what position they are holding or which party they belong to. If they threaten the peace, action must be taken.

“Do not threaten us if action is taken, what more when it comes to those who touch on 3R,” Anwar said at a press conference after attending a briefing on Penang’s development at Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow’s office in Komtar here yesterday.

Anwar was responding to questions on Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh’s detention in Kota Kinabalu earlier yesterday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said two police reports had been lodged against Dr Muhamad Akmal and the case would be investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The reports were in connection with his statements on the KK Super Mart controversial socks issue.

Anwar said national institutions must be defended, including constitutional principles as well as Islamic and non-Islamic rights.

“This touches on the King’s position... one cannot compromise.

“If they really have a problem, like with this socks issue and it is serious for Muslims, then the matter will be investigated, arrests will be made and (suspects) subsequently prosecuted,” he said.

“Do not use this issue or any other issues to instigate. That is what’s important, whether for Muslims or non-Muslims.

“So, I want to stress that we will not tolerate this,” he added.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, had recently decreed that no party should take advantage of the socks issue, including by inciting others.

His Majesty also did not want the issue to be prolonged any further.
