JOHOR BARU: Some 1,730 cops and personnel will be on duty at locations around Johor, during Hari Raya Ops Selamat, which begins this Monday,
State police chief Comm M. Kumar said that police would deploy manpower on the ground throughout Ops Selamat 22, which would end on April 13.
“Our men will be placed at strategic areas throughout Johor, including 48 hotspot locations known for being accident-prone and 31 blackspot locations known for being fatally accident-prone.
“We will also place our personnel at our international checkpoints such as Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI), Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB), Senai International Airport and ferry terminals as we expect to see a high volume of people,” he added.
Kumar said this after attending a road safety advocation programme held at Kempas Plaza toll station on Saturday (April 6).
He also said that the presence of police at such locations in Johor would help ensure a safe and secure Hari Raya Aidilfitri for everyone.
“The concept of Ops Selamat is total enforcement and advocation, which is to create awareness among road users that their safety is our priority.
“Motorcyclists are the biggest contributors to road accidents, contributing about 67%. Accidents happen when those behind the wheel make fatal mistakes, including speeding,” he added.
Comm Kumar also said that those who would be leaving their homes to return to their respective hometowns for the festive season should inform the nearest police station.
Meanwhile, state works, transportation, infrastructure, and communication committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said the smartlane would be activated from Thursday (April 4) until next Sunday (April 14) to ease congestion along the North-South Expressway in Johor.
He added the smartlanes are located at KM27 southbound (Kulai)–KM19 northbound (Senai) and KM19 northbound (Senai) and KM27 southbound (Kulai) as well as at KM4.5 south (Dato Onn)–KM1.9 south (Pasir Gudang) and KM0.4 north (Pandan)–KM6 north (Kempas).
Mohamad Fazli also added that those travelling for the festive season should obey traffic signs and security personnel's instructions when passing through the location.
