JOHOR BARU: Rubbish collection in Johor will be brought forward to Saturday (April 6) to accommodate the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
Waste concessionaire SWM Environment Sdn Bhd corporate general manager Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin said the change in rubbish collection schedule would take place from April 6 until April 9, with the assumption that the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri falls on April 10.
"During that period, 4,500 staff and 580 cleaning vehicles will carry out their tasks in 15 local council areas. We expect the amount of waste to go up by about 20% as people gear up for the celebrations.
"During this period, the waste is usually food waste and bulk waste, such as old furniture. We urge the public to dispose of their bulk waste beside their wheelie bins to make it more convenient for the rubbish collectors," he said.
He added that bringing the rubbish collection schedule a day earlier would also allow the company’s Muslim staff to celebrate the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri with their loved ones.
"However, about 20% of our staff will still be on standby during the festive season to keep Johor clean.
"We are focusing on 175 hotspots statewide with high Muslim populations, such as Tampoi, Kempas, Larkin, Bandar Tenggara, Kampung Melayu Majidee, and Taman Perling, as well as the main roads and city area during the festive period," he said.
Mohd Norlisam also reminded residents not to obstruct access to the wheelie bins during the festive season, which could make it difficult for garbage trucks to navigate.
Alternatively, he said, the public can drop off recyclable items at any of the 18 Kitarecycle locations statewide to earn reward points while caring for the environment.
Among the locations were the B5 recycle hub, Iskandar Puteri City Council Hutan Bandar, Sutera Mall, SWM Environment Bandar Dato’ Onn and Pura Kencana in Baru Pahat.
