KOTA KINABALU: A total of 83 citations have been issued by the Sabah Environment Department for failure to comply with environmental laws.
In addition, the department is preparing four investigation papers for prosecution and also issued 41 instruction notices, four compound notices and one equipment operation detention order.
In a statement on Tuesday (April 9), the department said it had conducted Ops Gempur Raya in several districts to prevent environmental pollution during the lead-up to Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
The operation was also to ensure compliance with environmental legislation at all premises.
“The department will not hesitate to take action against any party violating environmental laws, as contained in the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and other regulations," the department added.
The operation, from March 17 to Friday (April 5), saw enforcement officers visiting 84 food and beverage, manufacturing and service premises in Sandakan, Sipitang, Tawau and here.
“Among the offences found were non-compliance with industrial effluent regulations and scheduled waste regulations, as well as licensing issues.
“(The offenders) are required to implement remedial measures and prove these have been taken. We will be watching these premises like a hawk,” the statement read.
