KL overflowing with Raya cheer as tourists and city folk join in celebration

KUALA LUMPUR: The city was bursting with life on Hari Raya Aidilfitri as thousands of tourists and city folk flocked to join in the festive cheer.

The MRT and LRT trains into the city were packed like sardines, with passengers all dressed to the nines for the holiday.

At the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) park, the number of visitors grew towards lunch hour on Wednesday (April 10).

Many visitors were taking selfies and group photos at scenic areas there, such as the PETRONAS Twin Towers and the KLCC Lake Symphony Fountains.

Cashier Nurshima, 22, and her elder brother Adzlan, 24, came with their family of seven to take photos for their yearly family album.

“We dress according to a colour scheme, and take nice photos to print for our album.

“This year our theme is dark green and last year it was baby blue,” said Nurshima, who is in charge of coordinating the family’s Raya outfits.

Raya is a very special day for her because she can spend quality time with her family.

“My brother Adzlan works far away in Port Klang, so we rarely get together,” she said.

Based in Kepong, the family celebrates Raya every year in the city, and for the special day Nurshima makes sweet treats such as cornflake cookies and kuih batang buruk.

Raya decorations and the surrounding skyscrapers provided the ideal backdrop for their photos.
