Cops bust ganja traffickers in Cheras, seize RM300,000 in drugs, arrest eight

KUALA LUMPUR: A drug syndicate, which trafficked up to 100kg of ganja per week from Thailand, was busted after police seized almost RM300,000 worth of cannabis during six raids in Cheras.

Six men and two women were also detained during the raids.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the raids were conducted by Cheras Narcotic Crime Investigation division between April 18 and April 23.

"Following a tip-off from the public, a courier company office, several condominiums, and a house around Cheras and Pandan Indah were raided.

"We seized 94.8kg of ganja worth RM293,830.

"Six men and two women detained, all locals, have been remanded until April 29," he told a press conference at Cheras district police headquarters on Wednesday (April 24).

He said several items, including a mobile phone, a motorcycle, three access cards, RM34,000 in cash, two rabbit food packages, a pizza cutter, and a vacuum sealer, were also seized.

"We believe the syndicate has been operating for two years. They used luxury condominiums to store drugs," he added.

Initial investigations revealed that the syndicate had been getting their drug supply from Thailand via courier, Comm Rusdi said.

"They would order up to 100kg of ganja per week, paying their suppliers between RM800 to RM1,000 per kilogramme.

"Some of the ganja supplied were stored in rabbit food packaging.

"They would contact their supplier as well as customers via Telegram.

"They would then cater to the drug market nationwide by using courier services," he said.

Comm Rusdi said the syndicate would also process the ganja into small brownie pieces sold at RM50 each based on customer orders.

"We learnt that they would also sell the drug in ganja blocks priced at RM2,500 each as well as in cigarette form at RM100 each.

"All the drugs seized could have been supplied to 189,740 drug users," he said.

The police are still tracking down remnants of the syndicate, he said.

"We appreciate the cooperation shown by the public in passing information on criminal activities, especially drug-related ones.

"We urge those with information to contact Cheras police headquarters at 03-9205 0222 or KL police hotline at 03-211 5999," he said.
