Social media user being probed over comments

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have opened an investigation into an X account holder who allegedly made disparaging comments about the recent helicopter tragedy in Lumut, Perak.

Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the investigation is being conducted by the department’s Special Investigation Unit and its Prosecution and Legal Division (D5).

“We are investigating under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1995, Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he said in a statement yesterday.

A mobile phone believed to have been used to post the comment on X had been seized, he added.

“We have also referred the investigation paper to the Attorney General’s Chambers in line with Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution,” he said.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily reminded the public not to speculate on the incident out of respect for the victims’ families.

“We will take stern action against any party who disrupts public order and the nation’s safety,” he added.

It was reported that a police report was lodged against the X account holder at the Kerian district police headquarters on Tuesday.
