Police on the hunt for alleged con artist preying on the elderly

PETALING JAYA: Police are looking for an alleged scammer who was last seen preying on the elderly around the SS2 area in Petaling Jaya.

Social activist Kuan Chee Heng, aka Uncle Kentang, said in a Facebook post that the suspect would pretend to give out aid to victims but would then ask for bank details if they wished to get more help.

"The victim would be told they must reveal how much money they have in the bank. The excuse is that the amount of aid would be calculated based on their total savings," he said.

He added that the suspect would convince the victim to hand over cash at the bank.

"He will pretend that he needs to go and meet the bank manager and then escape. The last incident happened in SS2," he said.

When contacted, Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulnizam Jaa'far confirmed that the suspect was currently listed as "wanted" by the police.

"So far, in Petaling Jaya, there have been five cases (linked to the suspect), four of which led to criminal charges, of which he pleaded innocent. Based on a report lodged in Seapark, he is a wanted man.

"Further checks showed that 30 reports are linked to the suspect involving districts in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak and Pahang," he said, adding that the Seapark report was the latest linked to the suspect.
