KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak's purported addendum order and Umno's preparation for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election are among the top agenda in the party's supreme council meeting on Friday (May 3).
Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said that the party would give its full commitment to help the unity government's candidate, from Pakatan Harapan, to contest in the by-election.
"Umno will give its full commitment to help the unity government's candidate represented by Pakatan in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, by launching its election machinery from all of its divisions in Selangor and other states headed by the party," he said in a statement on Friday.
Pakatan is fielding DAP's Pang Sock Tao in the by-election scheduled on May 11.
The Election Commission (EC) had fixed May 11 for polling, with early voting on May 7.
Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin said the party would campaign for the unity government's candidate as the party was part of the unity government.
"When we contested in a by-election previously, like in the Pelangai by-election, PKR and Amanah helped us.
"So, now it is our turn to help. We must help one another, that is why we are under the unity government," he said.
He also confirmed that the meeting discussed its former party president Najib's addendum order.
However, he remains tight-lipped over the matter as it is in court.
"We did discuss it but it is now being tried in court.
"We cannot comment on it publicly as I am worried it will be in contempt of court," he said.
The High Court has set June 5 to decide on a leave application by Datuk Seri Najib Razak to challenge the existence of an addendum order, purportedly issued with the consent of the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, allowing the former prime minister to serve the remaining six years of his prison sentence under house arrest.
On a separate matter, Asyraf said that Umno welcomed the announcement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that civil servants would receive a pay hike of over 13% starting Dec 1.
"This will surely meet the long-standing hope and aspiration of the civil servants," added Asyraf.
The Prime Minister had made the announcement when launching the national-level Labour Day celebrations on Wednesday (May 1).
