Saifuddin challenges Machang MP to make a stand on civil servants' pay rise

KUALA KUBU BARU: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has challenged the Machang MP to make his stand known on whether or not he rejected the proposed pay raise for civil servants under the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA).

Saifuddin said Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal and his Opposition colleagues should tell the public if they are for or against the announced salary adjustment for civil servants.

"This will make it easier for the people in Kuala Kubu Baru to make a decision," he said on Friday (May 3) after attending Hari Raya celebrations at the Kuala Kubu Baru Police Academy.

It was reported that Wan Ahmad Fayhsal had said on Thursday (May 2) that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement of a pay raise for civil servants was hollow, considering the ever-increasing price of goods.

He also said that the salary adjustment would only take effect in December if Parliament approves Budget 2024.

On Wednesday (May 1), the Prime Minister announced a pay rise of more than 13% including a minimum pay of RM2,000 for civil servants under the SSPA.

Although the announcement of the pay increase was well received by civil servants, Anwar said he was aware that there were those bent on criticising the government.

"Don't worry. Our decision will be passed with style in Parliament so that it (the pay rise) can be implemented this December," he said.

He added that the Opposition MPs would not dare oppose the SPPA when it was tabled in Parliament.
