PETALING JAYA: A suspected scammer targeting senior citizens here has duped them of almost RM400,000.
The suspect, who was highlighted by social activist Kuan Chee Heng, aka Uncle Kentang, in a Facebook post on Wednesday, is currently wanted by the police.
This follows the latest incident in Seapark, where a senior citizen lost RM25,000 after being duped.
In the post, Kuan said that the suspect would pretend to give out aid to victims but would then ask for their bank details before scamming them off their savings.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulnizam Jaa’far said that total losses in the district linked to the 28-year-old suspect were estimated to be around RM395,000.
“His modus operandi includes offering ‘government aid’ to victims.
“The suspect would bring victims to the bank and, along the way, offer purported state government investment schemes.
“Victims who are interested will then take out savings to ‘invest’. This suspect has a record of 31 offences and has been active since 2014,” he said when contacted.
In an earlier statement, ACP Shahrulnizam said that a report was lodged on April 17 regarding the Seapark incident, where a retiree lost RM25,000 to the con artist.
It has been learnt that the suspect was linked to five cases in Petaling Jaya, with four leading to criminal charges where he pleaded innocent.
He is also believed to have been linked to 30 reports in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak and Pahang, with the report lodged in Seapark being the latest linked to the suspect.
