JDT to continue focussing on winning Charity Shield despite recent attacks, says Johor MB

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) will continue to focus on winning their game in the coming Charity Shield match against Selangor at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Friday (May 10) despite the recent anonymous attack on midfielder Safiq Rahim.

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi (pic) said that he was confident that the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, leadership would be able to bring the team to their success.

"I am personally shocked and saddened by the news, but at the same time, we are confident in the capability of the police to conduct their investigation on the matter.

"Lets leave this matter to the authorities; this is something that we did not ask for but it has happened, so the best thing to do is to move on and to continue focusing on winning the coming game," he said.

He said this when met at the Johor State Fishermen Association (Josfa) Annual General Meeting Officiating Ceremony and Hari Raya Open House at the New York Hotel, here, on Wednesday (May 8).

Earlier, Johor chief Comm M. Kumar was reported saying that the public should stop speculating on the attack involving JDT midfielder Safiq so they could investigate the matter in-depth.

He added that the attack was an isolated incident unrelated to cases involving football players in other states.

"The victim came forward to lodge a police report after his vehicle was attacked on Jalan Thompson on Tuesday (May 7) night.

"He was heading home when he noticed two men on a motorcycle (approaching). One suspect then hit the right side of the rear windscreen with a hammer," he said.

He added that police would also take extra precautions for the Charity Shield, with more than 1,500 officers and policemen deployed during the game to ensure safety and traffic flow.

He added that Safiq's case was being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for causing mischief.

Former national captain Safiq escaped unhurt after two men hit his rear windscreen in Johor Baru on Tuesday night.

The 36-year-old revealed the incident on his social media account by posting a copy of the police report and a photo of his damaged car.

The incident came days after national winger Faisal Halim, who was also known as Mickey, suffered an acid attack in Kota Damansara on Sunday (May 5).

On May 2, national winger and Terengganu player Akhyar Rashid was assaulted and robbed near his residence in Kuala Terengganu.
