KKB polls: Voters keen on a rep with no party affiliation, says Independent Nyau

HULU SELANGOR: Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election Independent hopeful Nyau Ke Xin says voters there may favour an unaffiliated candidate.

Nyau said this was based on her findings after covering close to 95% of the constituency during campaigning.

"The electorate's response has been encouraging. There's a palpable sense of fatigue and concern over the current political climate.

"I'm planning to engage with communities I've not yet visited tomorrow (Friday, May 10) before the campaigning window closes," the logistics company manager told a press conference in Kuala Kubu Baharu on Thursday (May 9).

Addressing reports of menacing calls from anonymous individuals claiming to represent a prominent party in the fray, Nyau said she had received half a dozen unsolicited calls for her to withdraw beginning two days after she filed her nomination papers on April 27.

However, she said she did not record these calls and so lacked any proof of the claim.

"I didn't lodge a police report as I considered it a by-election intimidation tactic," she added.

Refuting claims she was a pawn of any political party, she stressed that she was driven by a desire to provide an alternative to voters beyond what Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional could offer.

"I aim to empower voters to voice their discontent with the current political landscape," she said.

Nyau said her commitment to independence would persist beyond the by-election, as she would not be lured to support any party should she win but instead, serve the community as an autonomous representative.

The seat fell vacant with the passing of DAP's Lee Kee Hiong, who succumbed to cancer on March 21.

Saturday's (May 11) by-election will see Nyau going up against Pakatan’s Pang Sock Tao, Perikatan’s Khairul Azhari Saut, and Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s Hafizah Zainuddin.
