KUCHING: The Sarawak government has identified 11 river basins with the potential for developing cascading power sources, says state Deputy Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi (pic).

He said they included Sungai Gaat, Sungai Belaga, Sungai Danum, Sungai Balui and Sungai Tekalit in Kapit division.

The others are Sungai Tutoh, Sungai Tinjar and Sungai Baram in Miri, Sungai Limbang in Limbang as well as Sungai Lawas and Sungai Trusan in Lawas.

"For a start, Sungai Gaat has been chosen as a pilot project to study the feasibility of implementing a cascading power source.

"The project will only be implemented with the agreement of the local community," Dr Abdul Rahman told the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Thursday (May 9).

He said the Utility and Telecommunication Ministry had received oral suggestions from several assemblymen for cascading power sources to be implemented in their constituencies.

"Applications should be submitted in writing to the ministry for further consideration," he said.
