Missing climber: Efforts to locate Hawari continue with US$5,000 reward

KUALA LUMPUR: A reward of US$5,000 (RM23,690) will be given to any sherpa or individual who provides information on the location of Muhammad Hawari Hashim, who was reported missing on Mount Everest in May last year.

Malaysia Mountain Guide Association president Mohd Yussainy Md Yusop in a statement on Saturday (May 11) said that the reward by Pioneer Adventure Pvt. Ltd is offered to sherpas or individuals, particularly those on Everest during this year's climbing season.

He mentioned that the leader of the Everest 2023 Mission, Azim Afif, was currently on Everest to coordinate field operations.

"The Expedition Operator Association has been informed of a reward amounting to US$5,000 if a sherpa or any individual on Everest can provide information on the location of Hawari directly to the executive director of Pioneer Adventure Pvt. Ltd, Nivesh Karki, " read the statement.

Mohd Yussainy said the search effort is being conducted by the association in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Minister of Penang.

According to the statement, the PMGP has also received technical advice from the Malaysian Space Agency and the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department in carrying out the mission to locate Hawari.

"Furthermore, the association has received cooperation from the Malaysian Embassy Office in Kathmandu, Nepal, which has informed the Foreign Minister of Nepal for the country's military to be on the lookout during the ongoing Mountain Cleaning Campaign on Everest," it added.

Muhammad Hawari Hashim, a 33-year-old hearing-impaired Malaysian climber, went missing on May 19, 2023 while descending from Camp 4 after reaching the summit of Mount Everest. - Bernama
