Bakers show off their creativity with trendy Mother's Day cakes

PETALING JAYA: One of the most popular gifts for Mother's Day is a cake, and bakeries are outdoing each other by showcasing their creativity for the occasion.

Baker Jaclyn Goh said the “burn away” cake is a popular option at her bakery.

The top layer of a burn away cake is a sheet of paper that can be burned off to reveal an image beneath.

“Customers love it for the surprise reveal,” she said when interviewed recently.

Making the cake is challenging, as she needs to ensure the trick works.

“Some customers may accidentally get the paper wet, or it may become damp because of condensation,” she said, adding that such cakes sold for RM220 each.

Sheryldine Shalinee Michael, who operates a home-based bakery, makes another popular design called “bento cakes” inspired by the Japanese bento or meal box.

“I chose bento cakes and cupcakes because they are trending right now and help promote my business,” she said.

Her special set with mini cakes and cupcakes, all decorated in rose icing, was priced at RM75.

“I chose red and pink (icing) as it symbolises love and affection,” she said.

Sheryldine said she started promoting her Mother's Day bento cakes three weeks earlier.

“I started by creating a sample box and sharing it on my social media accounts,” she said.

She then had to ensure she could make enough bento cakes to meet demand, she added.

Meanwhile, Christine Choo decided to innovate with a fusion recipe.

She combined carrot cake with banana and pineapple spiced cake to make a treat known as hummingbird cake.

“This is our first year making Mother's Day cakes.

“The cake recipe is our own creation. It went through several rounds of testing,” she said.

As an added touch, the top of the cake is decorated with colourful edible flowers.

Choo started taking advance orders for the RM130 cake earlier this week.

Mother's Day is celebrated worldwide on the second Sunday in May, and falls on May 12 this year.
