ISKANDAR PUTERI: A total of 40 illegal immigrants were arrested by the Johor Immigration Department during an operation on the workers' dormitory in Gelang Patah, here.
Johor Immigration director Baharuddin Tahir said the operation was conducted at midnight on Sunday (May 12) based on public complaints regarding immigrants who were staying illegally in the country.
“The operation, dubbed ‘Ops Sapu', was conducted on 19 premises, where 246 foreigners were inspected.
“40 of them were detained, consisting of 27 men from Bangladesh, seven men from India, three men from Nepal, two men from Pakistan, and a man from China,” he said in a statement here.
He added that those arrested are aged between 19 and 42.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, Baharuddin shared that 49 illegal immigrants were arrested during a statewide operation from May 6 to May 8.
“The operation involved various Ops such as Ops Sapu, Ops Mahir, Ops Selera, Ops Minyak, and Ops Kutip.
“The arrests consist of 19 men from Indonesia, four women from Indonesia, two men from Bangladesh, eight men from Pakistan, a woman from Thailand, four men from Myanmar, five women from Myanmar, five men from Nepal, and a man from Turkey,” he said.
All of the arrestees are aged between 21 and 50 and were arrested in Johor Baru, Batu Pahat, Mersing, Segamat, and Muar.
Both cases are being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act of 1959/63 for entering the country without valid travel documents and overstaying.
