Teacher has close call with fallen tree

Tricky situation: Fire and Rescue Department personnel attempting to evacuate a teacher after a tree fell on her car in Kampar.

IPOH: A tree fell on a teacher’s car just as she was about to park the vehicle near her school.

Fortunately for Lau Chuan Sin, 35, she was unhurt.

“She was trapped inside the car after the tree fell on top of it,” Kampar OCPD Supt Mohamad Nazri Daud said when contacted.

Responding to a question on whether it was raining heavily with strong winds at the time, he described it as “normal rain”.

The incident happened at about 6.30am yesterday at a parking lot near SM Pei Yuan in Kampar where Lau teaches.

Supt Mohamad Nazri said firemen helped her get out of the car through the window.

“The car was badly damaged. The front windshield was cracked and the side mirror was broken, while the back door could not be opened,” he said.

He added that the teacher has lodged a police report.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre officer-in-charge Faiezaruddin Mohd Yusop said its personnel had to cut the fallen tree with a chainsaw before they could evacuate Lau from the car.

“It took some time to cut up the tree, with the rescue operation under control at about 8am,” he said.

There had been several cases of falling trees in Kuala Lumpur and Penang in the past week.

Last Tuesday, a large tree fell in Jalan Sultan Ismail in Kuala Lumpur after a sudden downpour, killing one, injuring two others and damaging 17 vehicles.

In Penang, a 80-year-old man was injured after a tree fell on him at the Penang Botanic Gardens last Wednesday.

On Saturday, a tree fell across Jalan Macalister in George Town during bad weather and damaged five cars.
